“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 KJV
We are constantly being bombarded through marketing and social media posts with the next greatest thing that will make us happy; but all of these things only bring temporary enjoyment. It’s hard not to get blinded by the allure of shiny new objects with empty promises of fulfillment.
Jesus tells us to lay up treasures in Heaven, instead of on this earth. How can we make sure we are laying up treasures for ourselves in the right place? Jesus tells us that we can look at our heart to see where we are putting our treasure. We can start by asking ourselves these questions: With what am I currently consumed? Why am I gravitated to getting more? What am I chasing to make my heart sing? Are these things temporary or eternal?
With the sickness and passing of loved ones in recent years, I’ve become more aware of the things that truly matter! Eternal things, like my relationship with God and people. Isn’t this what the life of Jesus was all about? Loving people and making a way for all of us to have a personal relationship with God?
Lord, help me today to lay up treasure in Heaven. Let me not be consumed with the temporary cares of this world, but let me draw closer to you so that I can love people like you! Let my heart be consumed with you and your Kingdom’s cause.
